National Gundog Association 2016

Judge – Mrs Maureen Taylor

I would like to thank exhibitors for a very nice entry. I have just re-read my opening critique from when I last judged the breed three years ago at Crufts. Pleasingly, mouths have improved, but there is still work to be done. Eyes and ears were once again good, although I did have some with light eye colour which detracts from the soft expression we seek. Poor movement was evident in some exhibits due to a combination of lack of muscle tone and incorrect construction. The general shape of the Clumber should be long with ribs going well back and low to the ground. We seem to be getting more Clumbers that are square with long legs. Breeders need to take note or we will lose the typical Clumber shape. As ever, temperament was impeccable. Grooming and presentation could be better in some cases, with some having too much coat that could do with thinning out. One trait I did notice is the feathering on the end of tails being left on in many exhibits, meaning the tails look extremely long when stacked and in some cases trailing on the floor when moving. The end of the tail feathering should be trimmed off so giving the dog a more balanced look. I would like to thank exhibitors for a very nice entry. One I have admired from ringside and was not disappointed when I went over him. What I would term an old fashioned type. He has a masculine head, enough neck which was strong, a deep chest and is of a good length. Short hocks, well turned stifles and his movement was what I would expect from a youngster, a bit floppy but he will tighten up. He gave a picture of overall balance, but had to give way to his sister today for BP.

This two years old dog still has some maturing to do which often happens in our breed, known for it’s slow rate of maturing. He has a correct scissor bite, straight front, is well boned and has enough turn of stifle. He moved well when he eventually settled.

1st Doctor Rashleigh At Ranzham - Hyman
This boy has a pleasing masculine head and soft expression. His body is long with ribs going well back and short hocks means he has the correct Clumber shape, standing on tight round feet. Level topline and tail carried straight off his back, both standing and when on the move. Well-turned stifles, correct rear angulation along with being well muscled means that he drives well off his rear.
2nd Winhampton Over The Yardarm Of Harrifield Jw Shcm - Thorogood
This boy is taking his time maturing, no bad thing and when finished, will give a better picture. A taller dog with nice shaped dark eyes and with no major construction faults. He does move well, but was a bit proud of his tail today which spoilt his outline on the move.

1st Clumbraise Baby He's Your Man (Imp Nor) Jw - Brookshaw & Newsham
A three years old dog and the sire of both puppy class winners. He is a balanced dog, masculine with a pleasing head and dark eyes, straight front, deep chest and well off for bone. He has good length of body and well-turned stifle. He moved well with his tail level carried correctly straight off his back.
2nd Whissgig Daddy Cool - Sheppard
I have seen this dog from ring side on many occasions, and was impressed with the quality when I got to lay hands on him. I liked the size of this dog, but would prefer a little more masculinity to his head. He has clean, dark eyes, a straight front, tight feet and well-turned stifles.

This is certainly a quality dog that I awarded the Res CC to when I last judged the breed. I gather that he has now amassed 36 CCs and there is no wonder. His head has matured into a typical Clumber shape and he has clean dark eyes and ears, level topline, together with good rear construction. His shape is everything I could wish for when standing, demonstrating an excellent example of what a Clumber Spaniel should look like. Presentation was excellent and he was shown in good coat, he moved with drive and enthusiasm.
2nd Whissgig Wizard of Oz at Forestree - Beardsmore
A taller dog with pleasing head and expression, clean eyes, tight feet, correct length of back, well-muscled rear which had good angulation. He moved with drive, but was not in the best of coats today. It was a close decision between him and the eventual Res CC winner.

A smaller dog with clean eyes, tight feet, good depth of chest and in hard condition, with a good coat. He moved well and has a level topline which he maintained as he went around the ring.

My Res BCC six years ago. An old fashioned type that I like, with a feminine head but full of character. She is well boned with a deep chest, straight front, the length of body that our breed should have with ribs going well back. Well-turned stifles, tight feet and good movement complete the picture.
2nd SC CH Winhampton Morag Mae - Wilson
Clean eyes, well boned, good length of body and spring of ribs. She has enough rear angulation and moved well, although a little proud of her tail today.

Oh! I could have bundled this one up and taken her home. A beautiful, old fashioned bitch. Fabulous bone and ribs that go well back, she has a really good length to her. The prettiest of heads, clean eyes and ears, front and rear angulation was spot on with good width of thighs and short hocks. Her correct construction ensured that she moves true fore and aft.
2nd Suelynda Pride of Our Alley - Boden
Still very much a baby. She is a finer bitch, with deep chest and enough turn of stifle. She moved with enthusiasm and was well presented. Again, another who was a little proud of her tail today.

A nice bitch with dark eyes. Overall, she presents a balanced appearance, with a deep chest, and a level topline. I was pleased to find her in good condition, well-muscled and she moved well.

Not a flashy bitch, but everything is in the right place and she just needs more coat to finish her off. A feminine head with pleasant expression and clean, dark eyes. She is well boned, has tight feet, good length of back and rear angulation. Forthcoming ‘maternal duties’ prevented her usual handler from moving her, so she was not as polished on the move as I have seen in the past.

Another that I have admired from ringside for some time. Credit must go to her owners as I know she was shy as a youngster, but their hard work has prevailed and she did not put a foot wrong today. A lovely feminine bitch presented in immaculate condition, with the prettiest of heads and sweet expression. She has enough reach of neck, deep chest, tight feet, level topline which she kept on the move, is well muscled, with good bone, correct angulation and overall construction means she moves true fore and aft and with drive. Being short from foot to hock, which I do like (and something that, as a breed, we are in danger of losing) completes the picture of a quality balanced bitch who was a delight and pleasure to go over.
2nd Whissgig All That Jazz - Sheppard
A bitch that from ringside does not look anything special or flashy, but when you go over her she has everything in the right place. She is a balanced bitch with no major faults. She has a sweet head and expression, clean, dark eyes, good deep chest and ribs going well back giving the length of back that we look for. I found her to be in good coat and hard, muscular condition which, along with correct overall construction, resulted in her good movement.

I gather that she is not long off a litter and therefore she was completely out of coat. She has a pretty head with clean dark eyes, is feminine in appearance, yet shows the strength that should be present in our breed. I loved her head which was for me exactly what I am looking for. A balanced bitch, with good length of back and ribs going well back and short hocks, who moved well, covering the ground in spite of the hot conditions.
2nd Jubilwell Diamond Diva At Stoweridge - Watts
A bitch with a sweet head and expression. She has depth of chest, with good angulation front and rear, was presented in exceptionally hard condition and she moved around the ring with drive.
